01 / MAKE IT YOUR SPACE

Start with the space below your light

Choose a scene. Only the measurements for that layout will appear.

Dining table

Compare a candidate fixture

Use the full outer dimensions, including shades and projecting arms.

Add hanging height & clearance

Enter all height measurements from the finished floor. A 30–36 in tabletop gap is a design starting point; choose the gap for your space.

Check the body & adjustment range

First enter the height and chosen clearance above. Installed length includes the complete fixture, canopy and suspension.

After calculating, changing a measurement updates your results automatically.

02 / SEE WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN

Try a familiar setup

Choose a room, load an example and adjust the measurements to suit your space.

Opal glass globe chandelier above a round oak dining table
01

A 48 in dining table

A round fixture starts at 24–32 in across. Try a candidate diameter to compare the edge margin.

Two opal dome pendants over a pale stone kitchen island with white cabinetry
02

An 84 in kitchen island

Two 16 in shades and 12 in end margins leave 28 in between shades, with centers 44 in apart.

Bronze shaded chandelier over a neutral living room seating area
03

A 12 × 14 ft living room

The room-scale starting diameter is 26 in. Use the seating zone if it defines a smaller area.

04

A bedroom with a 9 ft ceiling

A chosen 84 in floor clearance leaves a 24 in installed-drop limit. Check the complete assembly.

05

A tall entryway

A 144 in mounting height and chosen 96 in clearance leave a 48 in drop limit.

06

A staircase with two positions

Mounting heights of 144 and 132 in, each with 96 in clearance, make 36 in the tighter drop limit.

03 / BEFORE YOU MEASURE

Measure the space, then the whole light

A shade edge, an electrical center and the bottom of a fixture are different reference points.

How to use this lighting calculator

  1. Choose the space and fixture layout.
  2. Enter your dimensions, or load an example and replace its measurements.
  3. Read the size, spacing or drop result, then compare the complete dimensions of a candidate fixture.

Replace each example value with your own measurements before comparing a fixture.

Center to centerShade gapFull island length

Room, table or island?

For a room, measure the lighting zone’s length and width. For a dining table, use its width or diameter for a round light, and its length for a linear light. For an island, also measure full shade widths and the distance from each end to the nearest shade edge.

Overall dropGapFinished tabletop

Body height is not installed drop

Measure from the ceiling mounting point to the lowest part of the complete fixture. Include the canopy, connectors and suspension. For stairs, measure vertically to every affected step or landing from the same mounting point.

04 / KNOW WHAT IS BEING CALCULATED

Simple formulas. Clear assumptions.

Proportion guidelines offer a starting point. Geometry describes the layout you enter. Neither selects a fixture for you.

ROOM SCALE

Length + width

Add room length and width in feet. Use that number as a starting diameter in inches.

12 + 14 → 26 in

Kichler guideline
TABLE SCALE

Follow the surface

Round light: ½–⅔ of table width. Linear light: ⅓–½ of table length.

48 in round → 24–32 in

Artcraft & Kichler
ISLAND GEOMETRY

Edges before centers

Gap = (island length − two end margins − all shade widths) ÷ number of gaps.

Center spacing = gap + shade width

Equal-width pendants in one straight row.

HANGING GEOMETRY

Account for the full drop

Drop = ceiling height − table or counter height − your chosen gap.

96 − 36 − 34 = 26 in

Optional: explore area and target illumination

Size and brightness answer different questions. This separate estimate multiplies area by a target in foot-candles to describe light reaching a reference plane. It does not predict a fixture’s delivered illumination or required rated lumen output.

Enter an area and a target.

The dining example uses 10 foot-candles from Kichler’s 10–20 foot-candle discussion. Distribution, surface reflectance, maintenance and task lighting are not modeled. No universal target is assigned to other scenes.

A linear fixture over an island uses the table-length guideline as a comparison only. Check actual footprint, shade shape and working sightlines.

06 / FROM NUMBERS TO A LIGHT YOU LOVE

Use your result to check a candidate

Two lights with the same width can feel very different. Open arms and clear glass look lighter than a dense or solid shade.

  1. Compare the full outline. Include shades, arms and any parts extending beyond the main body.
  2. Check the installed range. Confirm canopy and suspension dimensions, adjustment increments and included hardware.
  3. Check the view through the room. Consider seated sightlines, cabinet doors, circulation and nearby fixtures.
  4. Confirm the installation. Review the actual product instructions, mounting conditions and requirements with your installer.

08 / A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Lighting size calculator FAQs

How do I calculate a chandelier size for a room?

Add the room’s length and width in feet, then use the total as a starting diameter in inches. A 12 × 14 ft room gives 26 in. For a light centered over a table, start with the table dimensions instead.

What size chandelier works over a 48-inch round table?

The ½–⅔ table-width guideline gives a starting diameter of 24–32 in. Compare the complete fixture outline and its visual weight before choosing.

How far apart should two lights be over an 84-inch island?

There is no single spacing without shade width and end margins. With two 16 in shades and a 12 in margin from each island end to the nearest shade edge, the clear gap is 28 in and the centers are 44 in apart. The centers sit 20 and 64 in from the same end.

Is center spacing the same as the gap between shades?

No. For equal-width shades, center spacing equals the clear shade gap plus one shade width. Existing electrical centers can be checked using the “Keep existing center positions” island mode.

How high should a pendant hang above a table or island?

A 30–36 in gap is a common design starting point. Choose a gap for the actual fixture, sightlines and space. This tool uses your chosen gap; it does not automatically raise the light by a fixed amount for each extra foot of ceiling height.

Can a body-height measurement tell me whether a light fits?

No. The complete installed length also includes suspension, connectors and canopy. Compare the required drop with the product’s actual installed range and available adjustment steps.

How does the staircase calculation work?

Each entered step or landing produces a drop limit: mounting height above that surface minus your chosen clearance. The smallest limit governs the entered positions. Other positions and the fixture’s full outline still need to be checked.

Does a larger chandelier always give more light?

No. Fixture dimensions do not establish lumen output, beam distribution or illumination on a surface. Use verified lighting specifications and consider the room’s other light sources.
