One long light, or separate pendants?
Start with the look you prefer and your existing ceiling connections. The same island is shown in all three drawings.
One linear chandelier
Two pendants
Three smaller pendants
Viewed from the long side of the island. Illustrations show layout only; they are not to scale. Separate pendants may need additional ceiling connections.
What size should you shortlist?
For a 6 ft (183 cm) island, a linear light around 36–48 in (91–122 cm) long is a visual starting point. Check its width too. Use tape or paper on the counter to compare the actual fixture outline before ordering.

| Layout | Centre distance | On a 72 in / 183 cm island |
|---|---|---|
| Two pendants | Island length ÷ 3 | 24 in / 61 cm |
| Three pendants | Island length ÷ 4 | 18 in / 46 cm |
Visible shade gap = centre distance − shade width. For example, two 12 in shades placed 24 in centre-to-centre leave a 12 in gap.
Use this only as a starting layout for equal-sized pendants in one row. If shades feel crowded or sit too close to the island ends, change their size, count or position. Existing ceiling points may require a different layout.
