About Lustre d'escalier

A staircase chandelier brings the space between floors together. Choose a shape that suits your stairwell and looks balanced from both the entrance and upper landing. Check the light’s width and full hanging length against the space around your stairs.

Use the filters to explore shapes, materials, finishes and lighting options. The guide below explains what to measure and what to check before ordering. If you are unsure about the size or hanging length, we can help.

How to choose a staircase chandelier

1. Find a size that suits your stairwell

Measure the opening between the walls and railings. Compare it with the light at its widest point, including arms or crystals. Check both length and width for rectangular lights; a simple scale drawing can help with curved stairs.

See the room-size starting formula
A starting point for round lights Room length (ft) + room width (ft) ≈ diameter (in) For a rectangular foyer, 14 ft + 9 ft suggests about 23 in (58 cm). This is a room-sizing guide. In a narrow or curved stairwell, check the actual opening and shape of the light first.
Opening · top view Opening length Opening width Fixture
Measure the clear opening length and width. Measure between the inside edges. The dashed shape shows the space the light takes up. Leave room for railings and doors.
Fixture · front view Suspension Body height Total drop Width
Total drop includes the suspension and light body. The suspension shown includes the ceiling fitting. Check what the product drawing includes; cord length alone is not the full hanging length.
Clearance · side view Ceiling to landing Total drop Clearance
Clearance = ceiling-to-landing height − total drop. Measure to the same walking surface for both heights. Check every step or landing beneath the light and use the smallest clearance. Drawings not to scale.

2. Check how far the light will hang

Overall drop means the full distance from the ceiling to the bottom of the light. Body height measures only the light itself. Check the full hanging length and whether it can be adjusted for your chosen option.

Work out the hanging space Maximum planned total drop = ceiling-to-walking-surface height − target clearance
See a hanging-length calculation and unit conversions
Example: ceiling to landing = 12 ft = 144 in; target clearance = 84 in; maximum planned drop = 60 in (152.4 cm). Measure down to the step or landing below the light. A 48 in drop would leave 96 in (8 ft / 243.8 cm) above that same surface. This checks height only.

Use the same unit throughout each calculation: 1 ft = 12 in; 1 in = 2.54 cm. Check how the light looks from the entrance, stairs and upper landing.

See the optional body-proportion formula and size table
A guide to the light’s proportions: body height (in) ≈ room ceiling height (ft) × 2.5–3. This does not give the full hanging length or the space left below it.
Room ceiling heightLight body height guide
10 ft (3.05 m)25–30 in (64–76 cm)
12 ft (3.66 m)30–36 in (76–91 cm)
16 ft (4.88 m)40–48 in (102–122 cm)
18 ft (5.49 m)45–54 in (114–137 cm)
20 ft (6.10 m)50–60 in (127–152 cm)

Around 7 ft (84 in / 213 cm) is an initial walking-clearance guideline, not installation approval. Have your installer confirm local requirements. Measure to the relevant step or landing, not necessarily the ground floor. Body proportions are only a styling reference; cascading lights may suit different proportions.

3. Before you order

A few quick checks can help you choose with confidence. If you are unsure about a size or feature, we can help you check the details.

Four things to check
  • Hanging length: check that the light can hang at the height you need and whether the length can be adjusted.
  • Lighting: choose your preferred light color and check whether the option you want supports dimming.
  • Installation: for a heavy or high-up light, speak to your installer before ordering.
  • Cleaning: think about how you will reach the light for cleaning or bulb changes.

Staircase chandelier questions

How do I measure a staircase for a chandelier?

Measure the width and length of the open stairwell, plus the height from the ceiling to the lowest point you want the light to reach. Check the light from the entry and upper landing, then compare those measurements with the product width, light body height and full hanging length.

How low should a staircase chandelier hang?

No one hanging height suits every staircase. Make sure the light’s lowest point is comfortably clear of steps, landings, handrails, doors and normal walking routes. Use the guide to plan the space, then ask an installer to confirm the final position if your staircase is high or complex.

How much space should I allow above stairs and landings?

Check the space above the treads and landings people use, rather than only the ground floor beneath the light. Also leave room from railings, walls and doors. The right amount depends on your stair layout and the selected light; an installer can confirm the final position.

Which shape works in a narrow or curved stairwell?

For a narrow stairwell, a slim cascade, compact spiral or vertical cluster often feels less intrusive. Focus on the light’s widest measurement, not just the style name. For curved stairs, compare its outline with the open space, handrail and upper landing before ordering.

What should I check about ceiling support before installation?

For a heavy or high-up chandelier, have an installer check that the ceiling and mounting point can support the selected light. They will consider the fixture weight and the type of ceiling. The right mounting method depends on your home and the specific light.
