About Lamps

A lamp can add a finishing touch to a bedside table, console or sofa corner. Choose a style that complements the furniture around it, whether you prefer a simple shade or a sculptural accent.

Lamp buying guide

Choose a lamp for where you'll use it

Start with where the lamp will sit and what you want the light to do: add a gentle glow, highlight a corner or help with a particular activity. A table lamp can also sit on a desk; the name alone does not tell you whether it is suitable for reading or detailed work.

Compare common lamp placements
Where you want the lampA useful starting pointWhat to check
On a bedside or side table Table lamps Base and shade width, overall height and easy access to the switch
Beside a sofa or in a room corner Floor lamps Floor space, shade position and distance to an outlet
On a desk or console Desk and decorative table lamps Space left for your work or decor, and whether the light suits your intended use

Match the look and the light

Compare the lamp's appearance and the light you want for your space.

Match your furniture. Compare the shape, shade and finish with the nearby table, sofa or bed. Look at the lamp both on and off.

Think about comfort. A shade can soften the appearance of the light. From your usual seat or bed, consider whether the light source will shine directly into your eyes.

Choose the light for your activity. A decorative glow can suit a relaxed corner. For reading, look for light that reaches the page. If brightness or light-colour settings are listed, compare the settings for your chosen option.

Make room for the lamp and everyday use

  1. Measure the space. Allow for both the base and the widest part of the shade. Leave room for bedside essentials or the items on your desk.
  2. Check it from your usual seat. Consider the shade position and whether the switch is easy to reach.
  3. Plan the cord route. For a plug-in lamp, check the outlet and cord length. Keep the base and cord clear of walkways.

Check power, controls and what's included

  • Power and controls: Compare plug-in, USB-powered or rechargeable options, then check the switch and any listed dimming controls.
  • Light source: Check whether it uses a replaceable bulb or built-in LEDs, and whether the bulb is included.
  • Package contents: Confirm the lamp type, quantity and included cable, adapter or remote for your selected option. A styled pair in a photo may be sold separately.
  • Rechargeable models: Compare stated charging and running times, including the brightness setting used.

Lamp FAQs

What is the difference between a table lamp and a desk lamp?

A table lamp describes a lamp placed on furniture. A desk lamp is usually chosen for a desk, but some designs are mainly decorative. There is overlap between the two. For reading or work, compare where the light falls and whether the model lets you position or adjust it for your activity.

How do I choose a lamp for a bedside table?

Check the space available for both the base and the shade, leaving room for the things you keep beside the bed. Consider how the light looks from your usual resting position and whether you can reach the switch easily. If you read in bed, check that the model is suitable for that use.

Can a floor lamp replace the main room light?

That depends on the lamp's output, how it directs light and the room. Some floor lamps create a decorative glow or light a seating area rather than the whole room. If you need broad room lighting, assess the model's stated light output and how it will work with your other lights.

Does USB mean the lamp can charge my phone?

No. USB may be used to power or recharge the lamp. Phone charging is a separate feature and should be stated for the selected model. If wireless phone charging is listed, check device compatibility as well.

How does the shade affect the light?

A shade can soften or direct the light, while an exposed light source may feel more noticeable from your seat. For a relaxed corner, consider a shaded design; for reading, check whether the light reaches the page comfortably. The effect also depends on the shade design and the bulb or built-in LEDs.

Will I receive both lamps shown in a product photo?

Not necessarily. A photo may show different versions or a styled pair. Check whether your selected option is a table lamp, floor lamp, single lamp or set, and confirm the quantity included.
